Cardiac CT Angiogram (CCTA)

Complete guide, preparation, and results interpretation

What is Cardiac CT Angiography?

A cardiac CT angiogram (CCTA) is a non-invasive imaging test that uses iodinated contrast dye and high-resolution CT scanning to visualize coronary arteries and detect blockages.

🫀

Non-Invasive

Detailed visualization of coronary anatomy without catheter insertion using advanced CT technology.

🔬

High Resolution

Submillimeter resolution showing plaque, stenosis severity, and detailed vessel anatomy.

Fast & Accurate

Complete scan in seconds with >95% sensitivity for detecting significant blockages.

Pre-Scan Requirements

❤️

Critical: Heart Rate Control

Target heart rate is <65 BPM. You may be given beta-blockers. Arrive early for monitoring. Avoid caffeine!

🚫 AVOID (12h Prior)

  • Caffeine: Coffee, tea, chocolate, energy drinks.
  • Smoking: Increases heart rate.
  • Viagra/Cialis: Stop 48h prior (interaction with nitrates).

✅ DAY OF SCAN

  • Arrive Early: 60-90 mins prior.
  • Hydration: Drink water before and after.
  • Medications: Bring a list.

Understanding Results

Normal (CAD-RADS 0)

No plaque or stenosis found. Very low risk of cardiac events. Preventative lifestyle recommended.

Abnormal (CAD-RADS >0)

Plaque detected. Severity ranges from mild (non-obstructive) to severe (obstructive). Further testing or treatment may be needed.

Stenosis Grading

  • 0% No disease.
  • 1-49% Mild disease (Non-obstructive). Medical management.
  • 50-69% Moderate disease. Potential ischemia, may need stress test.
  • ≥70% Severe disease. Likely flow-limiting, referral to cardiology.
