Patient Guide to Bulk-Billing Imaging
What is Bulk-Billing?
Bulk-billing means the imaging provider accepts the Medicare rebate as full payment for your scan. You will not have to pay any out-of-pocket costs (gap fees) for the service. The center bills Medicare directly on your behalf.
How do I get a bulk-billed scan?
- Valid Referral: You must have a current referral form from your GP or Specialist.
- Medicare Card: You must present a valid green Medicare card.
- Clinical Indication: The scan must be medically necessary and meet Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) criteria (e.g., specific clinical reasons for an MRI).
Common Procedures Explained
X-Ray (General Radiography)
Uses a small dose of ionizing radiation to produce images of bones and chest. It is quick, painless, and commonly bulk-billed.
CT Scan (Computed Tomography)
A series of X-rays taken from different angles to create cross-sectional images. Useful for detailed views of organs and soft tissues.
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
Uses strong magnetic fields to create detailed images. NO radiation is used. Bulk-billing for MRI is often restricted to specific clinical indications or types of equipment.
Ultrasound
Uses high-frequency sound waves. Safe for pregnancy and soft tissue assessment. Requires a skilled sonographer.
Booking Advice
While many centers on this list offer bulk-billing, policies can change. We strongly recommend calling ahead to confirm that your specific test will be bulk-billed. Some specialized scans (like OPG, BMD, or Interventional procedures) may still incur a gap fee.
